Madrid Hosts Discussions on Initiatives to Train Uzbek Athletes and Establish an International Triathlon Academy in Uzbekistan

A meeting was held at the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Madrid with Antonio Fernández Arimany, President of World Triathlon, and José Hidalgo, President of the Spanish Triathlon Federation (FETRI).
During the meeting, the parties discussed the current state and future prospects of cooperation between Uzbekistan and Spain in the field of triathlon. The Spanish representatives highly praised the outcomes of their visit to Uzbekistan in April 2026, during which a cooperation agreement was signed between the national triathlon federations of the two countries. Both sides agreed that the next stage should focus on the practical implementation of the agreements reached and the launch of joint projects.
Particular attention was given to athlete development. The Spanish side announced plans to send a team of specialists to Uzbekistan later this month to identify promising athletes. Those selected are expected to continue their training and further develop their skills at specialized high-performance training centres in Spain.
The participants also discussed an initiative to establish an International Triathlon Academy for the countries of Central Asia within the Olympic Village currently under construction in Tashkent. According to the Spanish partners, the project would help position Uzbekistan as a modern regional sports hub for the training of athletes, coaches and sports professionals.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation, expanding direct contacts between relevant organizations, and implementing joint initiatives in athlete development, sports education and the organization of international sporting events.
At the end of the meeting, the Presidents of World Triathlon and the Spanish Triathlon Federation (FETRI) were presented with commemorative gifts on behalf of the Triathlon Federation of Uzbekistan.
