Madrid Hosts Talks on Expanding Cooperation Between Uzbekistan and One of Spain’s Leading Engineering and Consulting Companies
Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Spain Farrukh Tursunov visited the Madrid headquarters of IDOM, one of Spain's leading engineering and consulting companies.
During the visit, the Ambassador held talks with the company's senior management, including Vice President for International Cooperation Tomás González, Acting Chief Executive Officer Juan Ramón López, and Regional Director for Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia Dmitry Avdeev. The discussions focused on prospects for expanding bilateral cooperation and implementing new joint projects in Uzbekistan.
IDOM representatives presented the company's portfolio of ongoing projects in Uzbekistan and reaffirmed their long-term commitment to further expanding their activities in the Uzbek market.
Particular attention was given to the development of master plans for the Samarkand region and several areas of Karakalpakstan. These projects involve comprehensive spatial planning, the identification of priorities for socio-economic development, the modernisation of transport and engineering infrastructure, and the creation of favourable conditions for investment and sustainable regional development. A particularly innovative component is the creation of a digital twin of the region, including a 3D territorial model, an integrated engineering infrastructure database, and a modern Geographic Information System (GIS) platform.
The parties also highlighted the successful implementation of IDOM's detailed engineering design for the 1,500 MW Syrdarya Combined Cycle Power Plant.
The company's management further expressed interest in exploring new projects related to the digitalisation of water supply systems and the development of advanced greenhouse complexes. The parties agreed to examine opportunities to apply cutting-edge Spanish engineering expertise and digital technologies to improve water resource management and introduce smart solutions.
During the meeting, the participants also discussed IDOM's potential involvement in Uzbekistan's large-scale infrastructure modernisation and spatial development programmes. The company's executives highly appreciated the reforms being implemented in the country, noting the continuous improvement of the investment climate, Uzbekistan's openness to international cooperation, and the long-term nature of the government's infrastructure development policy.
IDOM representatives stated that they regard Uzbekistan as one of their strategic partners in Central Asia and expressed their interest in expanding the company's presence in the Uzbek market, including through the establishment of a registered office in the country.
For his part, Ambassador Farrukh Tursunov reaffirmed that the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Spain will continue to provide comprehensive support to Spanish companies interested in implementing investment and infrastructure projects in Uzbekistan, while facilitating direct contacts with relevant ministries and government agencies.
At the conclusion of the meeting, IDOM's management announced its intention to visit Uzbekistan this autumn to hold substantive discussions with government authorities and further develop promising areas of bilateral cooperation.
